St. Joseph’s Hospital, Adazi-Nnukwu was founded in 1938 by the Catholic Archdiocese of Onitsha. As at that time, it was the only medical institution in the old Awka province and beyond. The ideals of the founding fathers were to carry medical care to the hinterlands. The School of Midwifery started training in 1940 with Grade II Midwifery Training after a visit by the Midwives Board of Nigeria. In February, 1963, the School was re-inspected by Nursing and Midwifery board and upgraded the School to Grade I Midwifery training school. The School ran both Basic and Post Basic Midwifery programmes until 2003 when it opted solely for Basic Midwifery Programme. The School is known for its good performance and proper grooming of midwives With the advent of Reformation of Nursing and Midwifery education and practice in Nigeria and the upgrading of Nursing and Midwifery certificates and programme to non-terminal OND and HND programmes The Proprietor through the help of the then Anambra State Government, rebuilt the school structure to accommodate both Schools of Nursing and Midwifery including their hostels to enable the institution move into the reformation, that brought about College of Nursing Sciences, St. Joseph’s Hospital, Adazi – Nnukwu. The schools are now known as College of Nursing Sciences, St Joseph’s Hospital, Adazi-Nnukwu, Anaocha Local Government Area, Anambra State, Nigeria. The College runs both Nursing and Basic Midwifery respectively.
To train Nurses with good leadership qualities, high sense of responsibilities, good imitative, continued interest in self-education and a thirst for knowledge and research in accordance with modern day technology to enable them function effectively in the field of Nursing both at home and abroad to move the profession to a enviable standard.
To create opportunities for each student to attain fulfillment in life and develop an awareness of present day needs, so that they may become efficient and professional nurses, thus providing quality Nursing Manpower towards delivery of qualitative, affordable and equitable healthcare services.
